Gilbert Tailboys' Life Story
Gilbert Tailboys was the only son of Sir George Talboys and Elizabeth Gascoigne. He was born around 1497 or 1498. This means he was about 23 years old when he got married in 1520.
Gilbert started his career early. In 1509, he was in charge of Harbottle Castle. He also served in the French war in 1513. His father, George Talboys, became very ill in 1517. Because of this, George was looked after by Cardinal Wolsey. Cardinal Wolsey was a very powerful advisor to King Henry VIII.
Gilbert's Marriage and Royal Connections
Gilbert came to the King's court with help from Cardinal Wolsey. He married Elizabeth "Bessie" Blount before June 18, 1520. Bessie Blount was the daughter of Sir John Blount. She had a son with King Henry VIII named Henry FitzRoy, 1st Duke of Richmond and Somerset. This son was recognized as the King's child.
After the King's relationship with Bessie ended, Gilbert was chosen to marry her. This was likely arranged because of his family's connections to Cardinal Wolsey.
Gilbert's Role in Government
Gilbert and Bessie received land in Warwickshire in 1522. They also received land in Yorkshire in 1523. By March 1527, Gilbert was one of the gentlemen who worked closely with the King.
He was chosen as the High Sheriff of Lincolnshire for 1526–27. This was an important local government job. In 1529, he became a Member of Parliament for Lincolnshire. Soon after, he was given the title of Baron Talboys of Kyme. He took his seat in Parliament on December 1, 1529.
Sadly, Gilbert died on April 15, 1530, not long after becoming a Baron. He was buried in Kyme church. His memorial is still there today.
Gilbert's Children
Gilbert Tailboys and his wife, Elizabeth Blount, had three children:

Later, she married Ambrose Dudley, 3rd Earl of Warwick. Elizabeth died around 1560 without having any children. Because of this, the title of Baroness Tailboys of Kyme ended.
