Gilbert Talbot (born 1383 – died 19 October 1418) was an important English nobleman and soldier. He held the titles of the 5th Baron Talbot and the 8th Baron Strange of Blackmere. He was also a Knight of the Garter, which is a very special award given by the King. Gilbert Talbot was known for his bravery and his service to the English crown, especially during the wars in Wales and France.

Early Life and Titles

Gilbert Talbot was born in 1383. He was the oldest son of Richard Talbot, who was the 4th Baron Talbot. His mother was Ankaretta, the 7th Baroness Strange.

When his father passed away in 1396, Gilbert became the 5th Baron Talbot. He was still quite young at the time. Because he was a minor, the King looked after him until he was old enough, which was in 1403.

In 1413, he also inherited his mother's title. This made him the 8th Baron Strange of Blackmere.

Serving the King

From 1403, Gilbert Talbot began serving Henry of Monmouth, who was then the Prince of Wales. His main job was to help protect the border with Wales.

In 1404, Gilbert and his group of soldiers won an important battle. They defeated a larger Welsh army at Grosmont, Monmouthshire. This showed his skill as a military leader.

He became a member of the House of Lords in 1407. This is where important decisions about the country were made. In 1408 or 1409, he received the special honor of being made a Knight of the Garter.

Later in 1408, Gilbert went to Ireland with Thomas of Lancaster, 1st Duke of Clarence. After returning, he worked with his brother John. Together, they helped take back Harlech Castle from Owain Glyndŵr, a Welsh leader.

Important Roles

In 1413, Gilbert Talbot was given another important job. He was made the Chief Justice of Chester. This meant he was a top judge in that area.

He also served on several special committees for the King. In 1415, he was waiting in Southampton to join King Henry V's army for a campaign in France. While there, he helped with the trials of some people who were involved in the Southampton Plot. This plot was a plan against the King.

Campaigns in France

Gilbert Talbot played a big part in the English campaigns in France. In 1417, he was involved in the siege of Caen. A siege is when an army surrounds a castle or city to try and capture it.

He was also made the Captain-General of the Normandy Marches. This meant he was in charge of the military in certain border areas of Normandy.

In the winter of 1418, Gilbert led a successful military operation into an area called Cotentin. However, on his way back, his forces faced a difficult attack from the Captain of Cherbourg.

In 1418, he became the Captain of Caen Castle. In the same year, he helped with the successful sieges of Domfront and Caudebec.

Gilbert Talbot passed away in 1418 during the Siege of Rouen.

Family Life

In 1392, Gilbert Talbot was planned to marry Joan. She was the 8-year-old daughter of the Duke of Gloucester. Sadly, Joan died in 1400.

Later, in 1415, Gilbert married Beatrice, a woman from Portugal.

Gilbert Talbot had a daughter named Ankaret. She became the 6th Baroness Talbot after him. However, Ankaret died when she was a very young child in 1421. After her passing, Gilbert's brother, John, inherited the title. John later became the 1st Earl of Shrewsbury.
