Gilead is a small, unincorporated community located in Perry Township, within Miami County, in the state of Indiana, United States. Being "unincorporated" means it's not a city or town with its own local government, but rather a collection of homes and businesses in a rural area.
History of Gilead
Gilead was first planned and laid out around 1840. A man named Adam E. Rhodes, who had moved to the area in 1835, was responsible for this. When a community is "platted," it means someone creates a map showing where streets, lots, and public areas will be.
It is believed that Gilead was named after a place called Gilead mentioned in the Hebrew Bible. This is a common way for early American settlements to get their names.
Local Economy
Even though Gilead is a small community, it has a few local businesses that serve the people living there and nearby. These stores help the community by providing goods and services.
As of late 2023, Gilead was home to four different stores:
- The Gilead General Store
- Squirrel Creek Bulk Foods
- Rabers Kountry Store LLC
- Interurban Collectibles
These businesses offer a variety of products, from everyday items to unique collectibles, supporting the local economy and community life.
