The Gilia tenuiflora is a type of flowering plant. It belongs to the phlox family. People often call it the greater yellowthroat gilia. This plant is special because it is only found in California. You can find it along the central coast and in the coastal mountains. It also grows on the Channel Islands.

There are a few different kinds, or subspecies, of this plant. One is called G. c. ssp. arenaria. It is known as the sand gilia or Monterey gilia. This subspecies is in danger of disappearing. It is listed as an endangered species by the government. There are only about 24 places where it grows, mostly around Monterey Bay. Another endangered subspecies is Hoffmann's slender-flowered gilia, or ssp. hoffmannii. This one only grows on Santa Rosa Island. This island is also part of the Channel Islands of California.

What the Greater Yellowthroat Gilia Looks Like

This plant has a stem with many branches. The stem grows from a group of leaves at the bottom, called a basal rosette. Each leaf is divided into long, straight parts.

The flowers are usually a pretty lavender color. They have a long part called a stigma that sticks out from the center. Even though its common name is "yellowthroat gilia," the inside of the flower (the "throat") is usually not yellow. It is more often purple or white.
