About Gillian Bouras's Life
Gillian Bouras was born in Melbourne, Australia, in 1945. Her parents and grandfather were all school teachers. As a child, she moved to different towns in Victoria, like Nhill and Beechworth.
Gillian went to the University of Melbourne. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree there. From 1967 to 1980, she taught English in high schools. Later, she completed her Master of Education degree. Her master's paper was about her grandfather's life as a teacher.
In 1969, Gillian married George Bouras, who was from Greece. In 1980, Gillian, George, and their two sons went to the Peloponnese area of Greece. They planned to stay for six months. But they liked it so much that they decided to live there. Their third son was born in Greece. Gillian later became a Greek citizen.
Today, Gillian Bouras still lives in the Peloponnese, Greece. However, she keeps in touch with her home country, Australia.
Gillian Bouras's Writing Career
Gillian Bouras published her first book in 1986. It was called A Foreign Wife. This book tells the story of her life as a wife living in Greece. It also shares the challenges she faced in Greek culture.
Most of her books since then are about being an outsider. They also explore what it means to belong to a culture. Her books often talk about family life too.
Gillian Bouras has also written many short stories and articles. These have appeared in magazines like The Griffith Review and Meanjin. She has also given talks at writing events in Australia and other countries.
