Gillian Rachael Hayes is an American computer scientist. She is a professor at the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences at University of California, Irvine (UC Irvine). She also serves as the Vice Provost for Graduate Education and Dean of the Graduate Division at the university. This means she helps lead and support students who are studying for advanced degrees.

Early Life and Education

Gillian Hayes studied at two well-known universities. In 1997, she earned her Bachelor of Science degree. She studied both Mathematics and Computer Science at Vanderbilt University. Later, she continued her studies and received her PhD in Computer Science. She completed her advanced degree at the Georgia Institute of Technology.

Career and Achievements

After finishing her PhD, Gillian Hayes joined the faculty at the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences in 2007. She became a professor there.

Research and Technology for Youth

While working as an associate professor of informatics, she received a special honor. She was named the first holder of the Robert A. and Barbara L. Kleist Chair in Informatics. In this important role, she received a special award. It was one of three Advanced Research Fellowships given by The Jacobs Foundation.

Her work focused on creating new technologies for young people. She also worked on ways to measure how well these technologies helped kids. This research aimed to design useful tools with and for youth. Later, she was recognized for her work with communities. She was a finalist for the 2017 Community Engaged Scholar Award.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Gillian Hayes and her colleague Sharad Mehrotra were honored again. They were named Distinguished Members of the Association for Computing Machinery. This award recognized their important scientific contributions. Their work helped to "propel the digital age," meaning they helped advance the world of technology.
