Gina's Music Journey
First Album: Nobody Does It Better
Gina Thompson's first album was called Nobody Does It Better. It came out in 1996. Famous artists like Missy Elliott and Diddy helped produce the album. They also appeared on some songs, along with Craig Mack.
Her first song from the album, "The Things That You Do", was very popular. It reached number 41 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It also got to number 12 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart. Another song from the album, "You Bring the Sunshine", was featured on the NBA @ 50 album. This song reached number 53 on the Hot 100 chart.
Working with Other Artists
In 1996, Gina also sang background vocals for a song called "Cold Rock A Party" by MC Lyte. Missy Elliott and Puff Daddy were also on that song. Gina later appeared on MC Lyte's 1998 album Seven & Seven on a track called "It's All Yours".
Gina Thompson also recorded her own version of a classic song from 1955, "Why Do Fools Fall in Love". Her version featured Missy Elliott and rapper Mocha. This song was included in the 1998 movie Why Do Fools Fall in Love and its soundtrack. By late 1998, Gina's first album, Nobody Does It Better, sold over one million copies. This earned it a Platinum award from the RIAA.
Second Album and New Beginnings
In 1999, Gina Thompson appeared on Missy Elliott's second album, Da Real World. Gina's second album, If You Only Knew, was planned to be released on September 21, 1999. It was going to be released through Missy Elliott's company, The Goldmind Inc., under Elektra Records.
Two songs were released before the album was supposed to come out. "Ya Di Ya", which featured Missy Elliott, reached number 38 on the R&B chart. Another song, "Caught Up", featured rapper Beanie Sigel, but it did not appear on the music charts. The album was never officially released, and Gina asked to leave her contract. After this, Gina continued to perform as an independent artist. She started working on a third album in 2008.
Later Music and Comeback Attempts
On July 28, 2008, Gina Thompson released a song called "We Don't Talk No More (Dancehall Remix)". This was meant to be the first song from her third album, Missing You. On February 23, 2009, she released the album digitally online. Physical copies were also available through Amazon. However, the album did not do well on the charts and did not get much promotion. Because of this, Gina was no longer with the record label.
In the summer of 2023, Gina Thompson tried to make a comeback. She released a new song called "Starving" in August 2023. This song was available on streaming and digital download platforms.
