Gina's Music Career
First Album Success
Gina Thompson's first album was called Nobody Does It Better. It came out in 1996. Famous producers like Missy Elliott and Diddy helped make the album. Other artists like Elliott, Diddy, and Craig Mack also appeared on it.
Her first song from the album, "The Things That You Do", was a big hit. It reached number 41 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. It also got to number 12 on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart. Another song, "You Bring the Sunshine", was featured on the NBA @ 50 album. This song reached number 53 on the Hot 100 chart.
Working with Other Artists
In 1996, Gina Thompson also sang background vocals for a song called "Cold Rock A Party". This song was by MC Lyte and featured Missy Elliott and Puff Daddy. Gina also appeared on MC Lyte's 1998 album Seven & Seven. She sang on the track "It's All Yours".
Later, Gina recorded her own version of a classic song. It was "Why Do Fools Fall in Love", originally by Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers from 1955. Gina's version featured Missy Elliott and rapper Mocha. This song was part of the 1998 movie Why Do Fools Fall in Love and its soundtrack. By late 1998, Gina's first album, Nobody Does It Better, sold over one million copies. This earned it a Platinum award from the RIAA.
New Music and Challenges
In 1999, Gina Thompson appeared on Missy Elliott's second album, Da Real World. Gina's second album, If You Only Knew, was planned for release on September 21, 1999. It was supposed to come out through Missy Elliott's company, The Goldmind Inc., on Elektra Records.
Two songs were released before the album was supposed to come out. "Ya Di Ya", featuring Missy Elliott, reached number 38 on the R&B chart. The other song, "Caught Up", featured rapper Beanie Sigel, but it did not make it onto the music charts. Because of this, the album was never officially released. Gina then asked to leave her music contract.
Gina continued to perform on her own as an independent artist. She started working on a third album in 2008.
Later Releases
On July 28, 2008, Gina Thompson released a song called "We Don't Talk No More (Dancehall Remix)". This was meant to be the first song from her third album, Missing You. The album was released on February 23, 2009. It was available online as a digital download. Physical copies could be bought through Amazon. However, the album did not do well on the charts and did not get much promotion. Because of this, Gina was dropped from her record label.
In the summer of 2023, Gina Thompson tried to make a comeback. She released a new song called "Starving". It became available on streaming and digital download platforms around August 2023.
