Giorgio Valentino Bocca (born August 28, 1920 – died December 25, 2011) was an important Italian writer and journalist. He was also known for being part of the Resistance during World War II. This group fought against the Nazi-fascists.

A Life of Fighting for Justice

Giorgio Bocca was born in Cuneo, Piedmont. His parents were teachers. He studied law. During World War II, he fought in the Alpini corps. He became friends with Benedetto Dalmastro and Duccio Galimberti.

After Italy signed an armistice (peace agreement) in September 1943, Giorgio joined a group called Giustizia e Libertà. This group was part of the Resistance. He became a commander, leading the 10th Division. They fought alongside American and British soldiers against the Nazi-fascists.

A Career in Journalism

After the war, Giorgio Bocca began his writing career in Cuneo. He wrote for the Giustizia e Libertà magazine. Later, he worked for several well-known newspapers. These included Gazzetta del Popolo, L'Europeo, and Il Giorno. He often wrote about Italian culture and politics.

In 1971, he was one of many who signed a document for the magazine L'Espresso. This document was related to a police chief, showing Bocca's commitment to justice and truth. Five years later, Giorgio Bocca helped start the daily newspaper La Repubblica. He continued to write for this newspaper for many years.

He also wrote many books. In most of his books, he wrote about social and political problems in Italy. He often shared his strong opinions. For example, he was critical of globalization, which is how countries become more connected. He also disagreed with the foreign policies of some large oil companies. He often spoke out against certain right-wing political parties. These parties were allied with Forza Italia, led by Silvio Berlusconi.

Giorgio Bocca passed away in Milan on December 25, 2011.
