Who Was Giovanni Agostino da Lodi?
For many years, it was hard to know which paintings were truly by Giovanni Agostino da Lodi. An American art expert, Bernard Berenson, helped figure out his special style. He also helped define the painter's career.
Discovering His Art
One of the first paintings identified as his is the Pala dei Barcaioli. This means "Boatmen Altarpiece". You can find it in the church of San Pietro Martire in Murano, Italy. His only painting that he signed is St. Peter and St. John the Evangelist. This artwork is in the Pinacoteca di Brera museum. It shows influences from the Lombard region of Italy. For example, it looks a bit like the work of Bramantino.
His Artistic Journey
Later in his career, Giovanni Agostino da Lodi was also influenced by the famous artist Leonardo da Vinci. You can see this in his painting Christ Washing the Feet of the Apostles. This artwork is displayed in the Gallerie dell'Accademia in Venice.
After a ruler named Ludovico Sforza lost power, Giovanni Agostino da Lodi moved to Venice. He then returned to Milan in 1506. He painted for private collectors and for the Certosa di Pavia, a famous monastery. One of his later works is Calvary. This painting is now in the National Gallery in Prague. He also worked with another artist, Marco d'Oggiono. They created a large artwork called a polyptych for the church of Santa Maria della Pace in Milan. Some parts of this artwork are now in the Pinacoteca di Brera.
