Early Life and Training
Giovanni Andrea Ansaldo was born in 1584 in a place called Voltri. Today, Voltri is part of the larger city of Genoa. His father was a merchant.
Ansaldo learned how to paint from an artist named Orazio Cambiasi. He might have also worked with another famous painter, Bernardo Strozzi.
Ansaldo also taught art to others. Two of his students were Giuseppe Badaracco and Bartolomeo Bassi. Ansaldo passed away in Genoa in 1638. He was likely buried in the Annunziata church, where he created some of his most famous art.
Artistic Style and Major Works
Not many of Ansaldo's paintings have clear dates or records. However, many of his works are still around today. An early art historian, Raffaello Soprani, wrote about them in 1768. Ansaldo's career as a painter lasted for more than 20 years.
Ansaldo's art style was typical of Genoa in the early 1600s. It was a mix of different influences. He was inspired by artists from Flanders, like Rubens and Anthony van Dyck. He also learned from Milanese painters such as Giovanni Battista Crespi and Giulio Cesare Procaccini.
The Annunziata Dome Fresco
One of Ansaldo's most important projects was painting the huge dome of the Basilica della Santissima Annunziata del Vastato in Genoa. He finished this amazing fresco between 1635 and 1638, just before he died.
His "Annunciation" fresco in the dome is considered the first true Baroque painting in Genoa. It uses a clever technique called trompe-l'œil. This French term means "to trick the eye." It makes flat paintings look like they have depth and are three-dimensional.
In this fresco, it looks like you are seeing inside a church with a cross shape. Mary appears to be rising to heaven. The Holy Father seems to be waiting for her in the middle of the dome.
Other Notable Paintings
Ansaldo also painted large artworks for churches. Some of his altarpieces were made for the Cathedral of Segovia in Spain. A painting called "Deposition from the Cross" by Ansaldo is now kept in the Accademia Linguistica in Genoa.
