Giovanni Battista Crescenzi (born 1577, died 1635) was a talented Italian artist. He was both a painter and an architect. He lived during the early Baroque period, which was a time when art was very grand and dramatic. Crescenzi worked in Rome, Italy, and also in Spain. In Spain, he helped decorate a special burial place for Spanish kings called El Escorial.

His Work in Spain

Around 1617, Crescenzi moved from Rome to Madrid, the capital of Spain. From 1620 onwards, he spent a lot of time working at El Escorial. This was a very important royal palace and monastery. The King of Spain, Philip III of Spain, was very impressed by Crescenzi's work. King Philip III gave him special titles. These titles were Marchese de la Torre and Knight of Santiago. Being a Marchese meant he was a nobleman. Being a Knight of Santiago meant he belonged to a special order of knights.

His Family and Students

Giovanni Battista Crescenzi came from a well-known family in Rome. His brother, Pier Paolo Crescenzi, became a cardinal. A cardinal is a very high-ranking official in the Catholic Church. Giovanni Battista Crescenzi married a woman named Anna Massima. His son, Alessandro Agostino, also became a cardinal later in 1675. Even a distant nephew, Marcello, became a cardinal in 1743.

Crescenzi also taught art to other young artists. Some of his students became famous painters themselves. These included Bartolomeo Cavarozzi, Juan Fernández, and Antonio de Pereda.
