Antonio de Pereda y Salgado (born around 1611 – died January 30, 1678) was a Spanish painter. He lived during the Baroque period, which was a time when art was very grand and dramatic. Pereda is most famous for his beautiful paintings of everyday objects, known as still lifes.

Who Was Antonio de Pereda?

Antonio de Pereda was born in Valladolid, Spain, around March 1611. He was the oldest of three brothers. His whole family was artistic; his father, mother, and two brothers were all painters too!

Antonio moved to Madrid to study painting. He learned from a teacher named Pedro de las Cuevas. He also got help from an important person named Giovanni Battista Crescenzi.

What Did Antonio de Pereda Paint?

Pereda painted many different things. He was known for his still lifes, which are paintings of things like fruit, flowers, or household items. He also painted many religious scenes.

One of his most famous historical paintings is The Relief of Genoa (1635). This painting shows a real event from the 1620s. It was made for a special room called the Salón de Reinos in the Buen Retiro Palace in Madrid. Other famous artists, like Diego Velázquez, also painted for this room.

After Crescenzi, the person who helped him, passed away in 1635, Pereda left the royal court. He then started getting jobs from churches and other religious groups.
