Giovanni Cariani facts for kids

Giovanni Cariani (born around 1490, died 1547) was an Italian painter from the time of the Renaissance. He was also known as Giovanni Busi or Il Cariani. He worked mostly in the city of Venice and other nearby areas, including Bergamo, which is believed to be his hometown.
About Giovanni Cariani
Giovanni Cariani's father, also named Giovanni Busi, was born in a small village called Fuipiano Al Brembo near Bergamo. His father worked as a local official for the Venetian government.
Giovanni Cariani himself was born in the same village. We know he lived in Venice starting in 1509. He might have learned painting from famous artists like Giovanni Bellini or Giorgione. He was definitely inspired by their work.
Even though he often worked in Bergamo, he passed away in Venice in 1547. He was greatly influenced by another painter named Palma il Vecchio. Cariani also had a special love for painting natural scenes, which you can see in his work called Sacra conversazione with a youthful donor. This painting shows holy figures with a young person who paid for the artwork.
While he was working in Bergamo between 1517 and 1523, he likely met Lorenzo Lotto. Lotto was another artist who worked there from 1513 to 1525.
