Life and Church Career
Giovanni Doria began his studies in Spain. He focused on philosophy and theology, which are important subjects for church leaders.
Becoming a Cardinal
Giovanni Doria became a cardinal at the request of King Felipe II of Spain. A cardinal is a very high-ranking official in the Catholic Church, just below the Pope. After King Philip II died, Giovanni Doria was officially made a cardinal deacon on June 9, 1604. He was 31 years old at the time.
He took part in two important meetings called "papal conclaves" in 1605. These meetings are where cardinals gather to elect a new Pope. In the first conclave, Pope Leo XI was chosen. In the second, Pope Paul V was elected.
Archbishop of Palermo
On May 4, 1608, Giovanni Doria was consecrated (officially made a bishop) by Pope Paul V in Rome. He was then named the coadjutor, which means he was chosen to help and eventually take over as the Archbishop of Palermo. He officially became the Archbishop of Palermo, Sicily, on July 5, 1608.
Serving as Viceroy
Besides his church duties, Giovanni Doria also served as the Viceroy of Sicily. A viceroy is like a governor who rules a country or province as the representative of a king. He was also the king of Spain's lieutenant, meaning he acted on the king's behalf. He held this important position several times:
- From February 1610 to March 1611
- From July to August 1616
- From August 1624 to 1626
- From 1639 to June 1641
Later Church Roles
Giovanni Doria continued to participate in important papal conclaves. He was part of the 1621 conclave that elected Pope Gregory XV. He also attended the 1623 conclave, which elected Pope Urban VIII. In 1623, he changed his cardinal rank to "cardinal priest."
Promoting Saint Rosalia
Giovanni Doria was very involved in promoting the worship of Saint Rosalia. He celebrated the discovery of her relics (holy remains). He helped make her known as the special patroness and protector of Palermo.
Death and Burial
Giovanni Doria passed away on October 19, 1642, in Palermo. He was buried in the chapel of Saint Rosalia, inside the main Palermo Cathedral.
While he was a bishop, he also consecrated (officially made a bishop) Manuel Esteban Muniera, who became the Bishop of Cefalù in 1621.
