Girsh Blumberg is an Estonian-American physicist. He studies how materials behave at a very tiny level. He looks at how light interacts with materials, especially at the nanoscale. He is a top professor at Rutgers University in the United States.

Professor Blumberg is known for his work with Raman scattering. This is a way to study materials using light. He has explored how electrons behave in special materials. These include superconductors and materials with unique magnetic properties. He has written over 100 scientific papers. He also holds more than 30 patents for new inventions.

Discoveries and Inventions

Girsh Blumberg and his team have made important discoveries. They were the first to see something called the "Leggett mode." This was in special materials known as multiband superconductors.

They also observed "Wigner crystallization." This happens when tiny particles arrange themselves in a crystal-like pattern. This was seen in quantum spin ladder systems.

His work helped explain a long-standing mystery. It was about the "Hidden Order" in a material called URu2Si2. This is a type of heavy fermion compound.

Another discovery was chiral spin waves. These are special waves of magnetism. They were found on the surface of topological insulators. These are materials that conduct electricity only on their surface.

Early Life and Education

Girsh Blumberg grew up in Viljandi, Estonia. His parents were educators. He has two sisters, Riina and Liia.

He finished secondary school in 1976 with top honors. In 1981, he earned his Master of Science degree. He graduated with high honors from the University of Tartu.

He completed his Ph.D. in Physics and Mathematics in 1987. This was at the Physics Institute of the Estonian Academy of Sciences.

Career Journey

From 1981, Blumberg worked as a research scientist. He later became a senior research scientist. This was at the National Institute of Chemical Physics and Biophysics in Tallinn, Estonia.

Between 1992 and 1998, he was a visiting professor. He worked at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. This was part of a special center for superconductivity.

In 1998, he joined Bell Labs. This is a famous research and development company. He worked there before joining the faculty at Rutgers University in 2008.
