Gisela Elsner (born May 2, 1937, died May 13, 1992) was an important German writer. She won a big award called the Prix Formentor in 1964 for her book Die Riesenzwerge, which means The Giant Dwarfs. Her stories often looked closely at society and people's lives.
Early Life and Education
Gisela Elsner was born in Nuremberg, a city in Germany. When she was older, in 1959, she moved to Vienna, Austria. There, she studied interesting subjects like philosophy (the study of knowledge), German language and literature, and drama (theater).
Her Writing Career
Gisela Elsner worked as a writer who could work for herself, not for one company. This allowed her to live in many different cities. She lived in places like Lake Starnberg, Frankfurt, Rome, and London. Later, she also lived in Paris, Hamburg, and even New York City. She finally settled in Munich, Germany.
She was part of a famous group of writers called Group 47. Other well-known writers like Günter Grass and Heinrich Böll were also in this group. They often met to share their work and ideas.
Her novel Die Riesenzwerge (The Giant Dwarfs) was very popular. It was even discussed in other countries. In Switzerland, a magazine that printed parts of the book was not allowed. In Austria, some people thought the book was not suitable for young readers.
Gisela Elsner believed in the ideas of Leninism, which is a type of political thought. She was a long-time member of the German Communist Party. This party aimed to create a society where everyone is equal.
Her Legacy
Gisela Elsner passed away on May 13, 1992. Her son, Oskar Roehler, is a filmmaker. He made a movie about her life called No Place to Go. This film helps people learn more about her and her work.
