Family and Early Life
Giselbert I was part of a noble family that ruled in what is now northeastern Spain and southern France. His father, Gausfred I, was a count who had a lot of land and power. When Gausfred I decided to split his lands, it was a common way for rulers to pass on their power to their children.
Sharing the Land
Even though their father divided the lands, Giselbert and his brother Hugh often argued over who owned what. They both wanted more territory and tried to take land from each other. This led to many conflicts and even wars between them and their children later on.
Giselbert's Time as Count
Giselbert ruled Roussillon for over 20 years, from 991 to 1013. During this time, he was responsible for governing his people and protecting his lands.
Challenges and Conflicts
The biggest challenge Giselbert faced was the ongoing conflict with his brother, Hugh. Even with their father's plan, the brothers continued to fight over land. This kind of family rivalry was common among rulers in those times.
Death and Succession
Giselbert I died in 1013 or 1014. After his death, his brother Hugh quickly tried to take over Roussillon. Hugh invaded Giselbert's county, hoping to add it to his own lands.
A Son Takes Over
It took several years for Giselbert's son, Gausfred II, to fully take control of Roussillon. Hugh's invasion was finally stopped in 1020, and Gausfred II officially became the new Count of Roussillon.
Giselbert's Children
Giselbert I was married to a woman named Beliarda. Together, they had three sons:
- Gausfred II (died 1074): He was Giselbert's oldest son and became the next Count of Roussillon.
- Sunifred (died 1031): He became a bishop in Elna, an important religious leader.
- Berengar (died 1053): He also became a bishop in Elna, following in his brother's footsteps.
