Gausfred I facts for kids
Gausfred I was an important ruler in a part of what is now Spain and France. He was the count of Empúries and Rosselló from the year 931 until he passed away in 991.
Gausfred I took over from his father, Gausbert, who was also a count. A count was like a powerful local ruler, managing a specific area called a county. Gausfred spent his entire life making his power stronger in his lands. He wanted to make sure his rule was firm and respected.
Gausfred's Rule and Legacy
Gausfred I worked hard to keep his counties, Empúries and Rosselló, united and strong. He made sure his authority was clear to everyone. This meant he was the main decision-maker and leader in his territories.
However, when it came time to decide what would happen after he was gone, Gausfred made a big choice. In his will, written in 989, he decided to divide his lands between his two sons. This was a common practice in those times.
- His son, Hugh, received the counties of Empúries and Perelada.
- His other son, Giselbert, became the count of Roussillon.
This division meant that the lands Gausfred had ruled as one would now be governed by two different counts.
Gausfred's Family Life
Gausfred I was married twice during his life.
His first wife was named Ava Guisla. She was likely the daughter of Raymond II, who was the count of Rouergue. Gausfred and Ava Guisla had several children together:
- Hugh (born around 965, died 1040): He was the son who inherited Empúries and Perelada.
- Sunyer (died around 978): He became a bishop of Elna, which was an important religious position.
- Giselbert (died 1013): He was the son who became the count of Roussillon.
- Guisla: A daughter whose life details are less known.
Gausfred I later married a second wife named Sibylla. They did not have any children together.
