Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Gausbert: A Count from Long Ago Gausbert was an important leader who lived a very long time ago, in the 10th century. He was a count of two areas called Empúries and Rosselló. He became count in the year 915 and ruled until he passed away in 931.

Gausbert was the son of another count named Sunyer II of Empúries. He also had a brother named Bencion.

Becoming Count

When Gausbert's father, Sunyer II, died, the counties of Empúries and Rosselló were first shared between Gausbert and his brother Bencion. However, Bencion died just one year later, in 916. This meant that Gausbert became the sole ruler of both counties.

Important Actions and Events

Gausbert was involved in some significant events during his time as count.

Protecting the Land

In 924, Gausbert joined a military campaign. He worked with the margrave of Gothia, who was another powerful leader. Their goal was to defend their lands against invaders known as Moors. This shows that Gausbert was active in protecting his people and territory.

Rebuilding a Church

In 927, Gausbert helped to rebuild an important church. This church was dedicated to Saint Martin and was located in Ampurias. Rebuilding churches was a common and important act for leaders in those times, showing their support for their communities and faith.
