Club Career
Giuseppe Baresi was born in Travagliato, Italy. He joined Inter Milan's youth team when he was young. He played his first professional game for the senior team on 8 June 1977. This was in the Coppa Italia (Italian Cup) against Juventus. He made his Serie A (top Italian league) debut the next season.
He became the team's captain from 1988 to 1992. He played for Inter Milan for 16 seasons in total. He played 559 matches for the club. This included 392 Serie A games. He scored 13 goals for Inter.
With Inter, he won many trophies. These included two Serie A titles, two Italian Cups, and one UEFA Cup. He also won the Supercoppa Italiana (Italian Supercup). After leaving Inter in 1992, Baresi played for Modena in Serie B (the second division). He retired from playing football in 1994 when he was 36 years old.
International Career
Baresi was a long-time player for Inter Milan. He was also their captain for four seasons. He won many trophies with his club. However, he did not have as much success with the national team. He played only 18 matches for the Azzurri (Italian national team). His younger brother, Franco Baresi, became more famous. Franco played for Inter's city rivals, A.C. Milan.
Giuseppe played for Italy's under-20 team in 1977. He also played for the under-21 team in 1978 and 1980. Baresi was part of Italy's senior squad for the UEFA Euro 1980 tournament. This was held in Italy. Both Giuseppe and Franco were chosen for this tournament. It was the only time both brothers were in a major tournament squad together. Only Giuseppe played in the games. Italy finished in fourth place.
Giuseppe was called up for the 1982 World Cup qualifiers. But he was not chosen for the final team. His brother Franco was chosen instead. Italy went on to win the World Cup that year. Giuseppe was also a starting player for Italy in the 1986 FIFA World Cup. Italy was knocked out in the round of 16.
Coaching Career
After his playing career, Giuseppe Baresi worked for Inter Milan. He was first in charge of their youth system. On 2 June 2008, he became an assistant coach to the new manager, José Mourinho.
Later, when Rafael Benítez became manager, he brought his own assistant. Baresi then became a technical assistant. He returned to this role when Benítez left. When Gian Piero Gasperini became manager, he also brought his own assistant. But Gasperini was soon replaced by Claudio Ranieri. Baresi once again became an assistant coach.
When Roberto Mancini became head coach in 2014, Baresi's role changed. He became responsible for scouting new players. He also helped develop players in Inter's academies around the world.
Style of Play
Giuseppe Baresi was a very hard-working player. He was good at winning the ball from opponents. He also understood the game very well. People thought he was one of the best and most flexible Italian defenders of his time.
He could play in different positions. He was naturally a centre-back (a central defender). But he could also play as a full-back (on the side of the defense). He could even play as a defensive midfielder. This was because he had a lot of energy and stamina.
Personal Life
Giuseppe Baresi is the older brother of Franco Baresi. Franco was a famous defender and captain for A.C. Milan. When they were young, both brothers tried out for Inter Milan. Inter chose Giuseppe, but they did not choose Franco. Franco then joined Inter's local rivals, AC Milan.
Because Franco was younger, he was first known as "Baresi 2." But Franco became very successful and popular later in his career. So, Giuseppe became known as "the other Baresi."
Giuseppe's daughter, Regina, also played football. She was a striker and captain for Inter Women.
