The Glaciarium is an exciting museum all about ice and glaciers! It's built to teach you about these amazing natural wonders. You can learn about huge glaciers and the incredible Southern Patagonian Ice Field.

The museum is located in El Calafate, a town in Patagonia, southern Argentina. This town is often called the 'gateway to glaciers'. The Glaciarium first opened its doors on January 17, 2011. The country's president was even there for the opening! Architects Santiago Cordeyro Arquitectos and Pablo Güiraldes designed the building.

The Glaciarium focuses on ice and glaciers. It helps visitors understand these natural phenomena in a fun way. A scientist named Pedro Skvarca, who studies glaciers, is the scientific director. The museum has a main hall and three exhibition halls. Together, they cover a huge area of 2,500 square meters (about 27,000 square feet).

Two of the halls have permanent exhibits about glaciers. These exhibits use cool things like dioramas, multimedia displays, and 3D models. The third hall is a cultural space and a movie theater. Here, you can watch 3D documentaries and other films.

What Makes Glaciarium Special?

The Glaciarium has been recognized as very important. The Argentine National Parks Bureau, the Province of Santa Cruz, and the National Congress have all declared it of cultural interest. This means it's a special place for learning and discovery!

The museum's main exhibits teach you many things. You can learn how glaciers form and how snow turns into ice. You'll also discover how glaciers move. The exhibits also cover Earth's past and the amazing glaciers found in Patagonia. You can even learn about the early explorers and scientists who studied these icy giants.

Visit the Unique Ice Bar

In October 2011, a special ice bar opened inside the Glaciarium. It was said to be the only bar in the world made completely from glacial ice! It's super cold inside, so visitors get warm capes, gloves, and boots. Because of the chilly temperature, you can only stay in the bar for about 20 minutes. It's a truly unique experience!
