The Glandford Watermill is a historic building found near the village of Glandford in Norfolk, England. It sits right on the River Glaven. This area is part of the Wiveton parish, located in North Norfolk.

What is the Glandford Watermill?

This watermill was built in 1907. However, a mill has stood in this spot for a very long time. Maps from 1797 already show a mill here. The current building is made from local materials. These include red bricks from Norfolk and flints. The flints were dug up from a gravel pit nearby. The roof is covered with red pantiles. The mill building has three main floors plus an attic. A pond, called the mill pond, is located just south of the building. This pond helped power the mill.

History of the Glandford Watermill

The first person recorded working as a miller at Glandford was William Cook in 1819. He wrote a letter in 1824. In his letter, he mentioned something interesting about the river. He said that ocean tides would flow up the River Glaven. These tides would pass through the water wheel. Then they would go into the mill dam. This happened almost every day until 1823. It's likely that in older times, sea water reached even further inland during high tides.

When the current mill was built in 1907, Sir Alfred Jodrell owned it. He lived at a place called Bayfield Hall. Records show that he kept the watermill in very good condition. The mill stopped working sometime around World War II. In 1969, the mill was sold. By then, its large waterwheel had been taken away. The mill building was then used to store farm supplies. Later, the watermill was changed into a home. In 1971, it was also used for a fish-farming business.
