The Glasgow Emancipation Society was a special group formed in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1833. Its main goal was to help end slavery, especially in places like the United States. People who wanted to stop slavery were called "abolitionists."

This society was part of a bigger movement in the United Kingdom to make sure everyone was free. Important members included James McCune Smith, John Murray, William Smeal, Ralph Wardlaw, Anthony Wigham, and Hugh Heugh.

There were also other similar groups, like the Glasgow Ladies' Emancipation Society and the Edinburgh Emancipation Society, which also started in 1833. Later, an Edinburgh Ladies' Emancipation Society was formed too. These groups worked together to fight for freedom.

Fighting for Freedom: What They Believed

The fight against slavery had different ideas about how to achieve freedom. Some people, like William Lloyd Garrison from America, believed that enslaved people should be set free immediately, without any delay. The Glasgow Emancipation Society strongly supported this idea of immediate freedom.

Other groups thought that ending slavery should happen slowly, over time, with a plan. But the Glasgow Society, along with groups in Bristol, Edinburgh, and Dublin, believed that waiting was not fair. They wanted slavery to end right away.
