The Glasgow Emancipation Society was a group of people from Glasgow, Scotland. They came together in 1833 to fight against slavery. This group was part of a bigger movement called abolitionism, which aimed to end slavery completely.

Many important people were part of this society. Some of them included James McCune Smith, John Murray, William Smeal, Ralph Wardlaw, Anthony Wigham, and Hugh Heugh. They worked hard to make a difference.

Other Groups Fighting Slavery

The Glasgow Emancipation Society was not the only group working to end slavery. There was also a Glasgow Ladies' Emancipation Society, which was a similar group formed by women. In 1833, an Edinburgh Emancipation Society was also created in Edinburgh, and later, an Edinburgh Ladies' Emancipation Society was formed there too. These groups often worked together to achieve their goals.

Different Ideas on Ending Slavery

People who wanted to end slavery, called abolitionists, sometimes had different ideas on how to do it. The British and American abolitionist movements had a disagreement about the best way forward.

One important leader, William Lloyd Garrison, believed that American slaves should be freed immediately. The Glasgow Emancipation Society, along with groups in Bristol, Edinburgh, and Dublin, strongly supported this idea of immediate freedom. However, other groups thought it would be better to end slavery slowly, over time, in a more controlled way.
