The Stock Exchange Building Glasgow
The historic Stock Exchange Building in Glasgow.

The Glasgow Stock Exchange was once a very important building and business in the city of Glasgow, Scotland. A stock exchange is a place where people buy and sell shares of companies. This helps businesses get money to grow, and it allows people to invest their savings.

The Glasgow Stock Exchange started in 1844. For many years, it was a key part of Scotland's economy. However, in 1973, it joined with the larger London Stock Exchange. This meant that Glasgow no longer had its own separate stock exchange.

The Historic Building

The building you see today was built between 1875 and 1877. It stands at the corner of Nelson Mandela Place and Buchanan Street. Before 1986, Nelson Mandela Place was known as St George's Place.

Building Design and Architect

The famous architect John Burnet designed the building. He used a style called Venetian Gothic. This style often features pointed arches and detailed stone carvings, similar to old buildings in Venice, Italy. Some people think its design was inspired by the Royal Courts of Justice building.

Changes Over Time

The building was made bigger in 1906 with an extension on St George's Place. Later, between 1969 and 1971, the whole building was updated. Today, the Glasgow Stock Exchange building is a very special place. It is protected as a "category A listed building." This means it is a building of great historical importance.

What's Inside Today?

Even though it's no longer a stock exchange, the building is still busy. As of 2019, it holds shops, government offices, and other businesses.
