Gleann Gabhra is a small, award-winning cheese company in Ireland. It's owned by Dominic and Fionnuala Gryson. Their farm is in Macetown, close to the famous Hill of Tara in County Meath. They are well-known for making a special cheese called Tara Bán. This cheese is a mild goat's Cheddar. It has a firm texture and a bright white color. Dominic and Fionnuala Gryson started making cheese in 2010. They use pasteurized milk from their own herd of goats.
The Story of Gleann Gabhra Farm
The farm began in 1996. The Grysons bought 20 acres of land. At first, they planned to raise beef and grow crops like grain and potatoes.
From Goats to Cheese
Later, they tried to raise goats and sell goat's milk. This didn't work out as they hoped. So, in 2010, they decided to try something new. They bought a machine to pasteurize milk. Pasteurizing means heating the milk to make it safe.
After getting the pasteurizer, they started making cheese. They sold their cheese at local markets. Their cheese quickly became popular. By 2011, their goat herd had grown a lot. They had about 140 dairy goats. These goats produced a lot of milk each year. They made between 900 and 1,000 liters of milk annually. Today, they make many different products from goat's milk.
Awards for Tara Bán Cheese
The Tara Bán cheese has won important awards. In 2010, it won a gold medal. This award was given at the British Cheese Awards. It was named the best hard cheese that year.
