Gleb Wataghin (born November 3, 1899, died October 10, 1986) was a very important physicist. He was born in Birzula, which was part of the Russian Empire, and later became an Italian citizen. Gleb Wataghin was known for his work in both theoretical and experimental physics. He also helped a lot to improve how physics was taught and researched in two different places: the University of São Paulo in Brazil and the University of Turin in Italy.

A New Start in Brazil

In 1934, Gleb Wataghin was invited to help create something special. He joined other scientists from Europe to start the Department of Physics at the new University of São Paulo in Brazil. This was a big step for science in South America.

Mentoring Young Scientists

Wataghin became a mentor to many young and talented physicists in Brazil. He guided them and helped them grow in their careers. Some of these bright students included César Lattes, Oscar Sala, Mário Schenberg, Roberto Salmeron, Marcelo Damy de Souza Santos, and Jayme Tiomno. These students later became famous scientists themselves.

Honoring His Legacy

Gleb Wataghin's work had a lasting impact. The Institute of Physics at the State University of Campinas in Campinas, Brazil, was named in his honor. There is also a special prize in Physics named after him. In 1955, the University of São Paulo gave him an honorary doctorate, which is a special award for his great contributions.

Awards and Recognition

Gleb Wataghin received several important awards for his scientific work. In 1951, he was given the Feltrinelli Prize. This prize is awarded to people who have made outstanding achievements in science and arts. From 1960, he also became a national member of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei. This is one of Italy's oldest and most respected scientific academies.
