Glen Douglas (which is Gleann Dùghlais in Scottish Gaelic) is a beautiful valley in the southwest Scottish Highlands. A glen is a type of valley, often long and deep. This glen is home to the Douglas Water, a river that flows into Loch Lomond at its eastern end, near the village of Inverbeg.

A narrow, single-track road runs through Glen Douglas. This road connects two main roads: the A82, which follows Loch Lomond, and the A814, which runs beside Loch Long.

Glen Douglas is surrounded by impressive hills. To the north, you can see Beinn Bhreac, which is about 681 meters (2,234 feet) tall, and Tullich Hill, standing at about 632 meters (2,073 feet). What is a Glen?

A glen is a type of valley, usually long and narrow, often with a river or stream flowing through it. They are very common in Scotland and Ireland. Glen Douglas is a great example of this kind of natural landscape.

The Douglas Water River

The Douglas Water is the main river that flows through Glen Douglas. It starts high in the hills and winds its way down the valley. Eventually, it reaches the large and famous Loch Lomond, adding its water to the loch.

Important Sites in Glen Douglas

At the western end of Glen Douglas, there is a special military site called the DM Glen Douglas munitions depot. A munitions depot is a place where military supplies, like ammunition, are stored safely. This depot is connected to a railway line that runs from Helensburgh to Crianlarich. This railway helps transport supplies to and from the depot.

Farms of the Glen

Glen Douglas also has three farms. Two of these farms are still active today. They are named after the hills in the glen: Doune Farm and Tullich Farm. These farms play a role in the local community and landscape.
