History of Glendale Town Center
Planning the Shopping Center
The idea for Glendale Shopping Center began in 1955. A person named Howard M. Landau worked with two large department stores from Indianapolis, William H. Block Co. and L. S. Ayres. These stores were planned to be the mall's "anchor stores." Anchor stores are big, well-known stores that attract many shoppers to a mall.
The plan was to place these two big stores at opposite ends of a long hallway. This hallway would connect them and have about 45 smaller stores in between. The chosen spot for the mall was along Keystone Avenue at 62nd Street. The people from William H. Block Co. thought this location was perfect for the city's growth. They also believed that having both big department stores together would give customers more choices. The famous architect Victor Gruen designed the mall.
Opening and Early Success
When the Glendale Shopping Center first opened, it was a very important shopping spot in Indianapolis. It was a huge place, about 685,000-square-foot (63,600 m2). The center had many fancy and popular stores. Before Glendale was built, most big department stores in Indianapolis were only found in the downtown area. Glendale was often the first store branch to open outside of the main downtown locations. In the 1960s, the shopping center was changed into a covered, indoor mall.
Changes Over Time
Later, another shopping center called The Fashion Mall at Keystone opened about two miles (3.2 km) north of Glendale. After this new mall opened, Glendale started to lose many of its popular stores.
Because of these changes, the original mall building was torn down on March 1, 2007. But Glendale didn't stay empty for long! New buildings and designs were put in place. By early 2008, it reopened as an open-air shopping center once again.
Today, the company called Kite Realty owns the Glendale Town Center.
