Glenn Naunton Davies (born 1950) is an Australian Anglican bishop. Since August 2022, he has been the bishop of the Diocese of the Southern Cross. This is an Anglican church group that operates separately from the main Anglican Church of Australia.
Before this, he served as the Archbishop of Sydney. He was also the Metropolitan (a senior bishop) for the Province of New South Wales within the Anglican Church of Australia. He held these important roles from August 23, 2013, to March 26, 2021.
Early Life and Learning
Glenn Davies was born on September 26, 1950. He attended Shore School for his early education. Later, he studied at several universities and colleges. These included the University of Sydney, Westminster Theological Seminary, Moore Theological College, and the University of Sheffield.
His Work as a Church Leader
Glenn Davies became a church leader, or was ordained, in 1981. He began his work as a curate at St Stephen's in Willoughby. A curate is a junior church leader who helps a more experienced one.
After that, he became a lecturer (a teacher) at Moore Theological College. He taught there until 1995. He also served as the rector (the main priest in charge of a church) at St Luke's in Miranda. He was also a canon theologian for the Diocese of Ballarat. This means he was a special advisor on religious teachings.
From 2002 to 2014, Davies was the Bishop of the North Region in Sydney. This role meant he was a leader for a specific area of the Sydney diocese.
In 2013, many members of the church's governing body, called the synod, suggested him for the role of Archbishop of Sydney. He was then chosen and became the archbishop-elect on August 6, 2013. His official ceremony, called an installation service, took place on August 23, 2013.
Awards and Recognition
Glenn Davies has received the Centenary Medal. This medal is given to people who have made a significant contribution to Australian society.
