Glenn's Music Journey
Starting in Music
In 1995, Glenn won a singing competition called Cipta Pesona Bintang. In the same year, he joined a rock band named Funk Section. The next year, he was a finalist in the Asia Song Festival.
In 1998, Glenn decided to leave Funk Section. He wanted to become a solo R&B singer. He felt that R&B music was a better fit for his voice. That year, he released his first solo album, which was simply called GLENN. It sold 50,000 copies, which was good because R&B music was not very popular in Indonesia at that time.
Rising to Fame
In 2000, Glenn released his second solo album, Kembali (meaning Return). A song from this album, "Kasih Putih" ("White Love"), became very popular and was played a lot on the radio. In 2001, he won third place at the Russian Asia Dauzy International Song Festival.
In August 2002, he released one of his most successful albums. It was titled Selamat Pagi, Dunia (which means Good Morning, World).
Concerts and Collaborations
In March 2009, Glenn was a main performer at a special concert. This concert honored the late Indonesian singer Chrisye during the Java Jazz Festival. Later that year, Glenn performed tribute concerts for Michael Jackson. He sang Jackson's hit songs in five different cities across Indonesia.
In 2011, Glenn teamed up with two other singers, Tompi and Sandhy Sondoro. They performed a series of concerts together. They called themselves Trio Lestari, which means "The Eternal Trio."
Glenn celebrated his 17th year in the music business in 2012. He held a concert at Istora Gelora Bung Karno on September 2. The concert was completely sold out, with 7,500 fans attending.
Venturing into Film
In 2014, Glenn started working in film production. He produced a movie called Cahaya Dari Timur: Beta Maluku. This film later won the award for best movie at the Indonesian Film Festival.
Influences and Inspiration
Glenn Fredly often said that Michael Jackson was a big influence on him. He mentioned that Jackson inspired him "through his music, his style, his dancing, everything." Glenn also said that Jackson's work to help others inspired his own charity efforts. He also admired other famous musicians like Marvin Gaye and Quincy Jones. Glenn was also a big fan of the Indonesian singer Chrisye.
