History of Glenn Springs
The Famous Healing Waters
For over 100 years, people believed the water from Glenn Springs could heal almost any sickness. It was said that Native Americans also used the springs for their special powers. In the late 1700s, the land around the springs was given to Henry Storey by the king. Even George Washington supposedly visited to try the water!
From Inn to Grand Hotel
In 1825, a man named John B. Glenn bought the land and opened an inn. The springs were named after him. His inn became very popular. In 1835, people bought shares to help build a large hotel on the land.
The hotel was famous for being fancy and comfortable, as well as for its special water. Small cabins and a place to bottle the water were also built nearby. The bottled water was even kept in the offices of many important politicians.
The Hotel's End and Bottled Water
Sadly, the grand hotel burned down in the 1940s and was never rebuilt. Around the early 1900s, a railroad even took visitors from Roebuck (then called Becka) to the hotel.
From the 1930s until 1970, J W Bell owned Glenn Springs. His company in Spartanburg, South Carolina, bottled the spring water. They sold it in one-gallon glass bottles to drugstores and delivered it to homes. Many people still believed it had healing powers.
