Glenn Square is a big shopping area in Anchorage, Alaska, in the United States. It's like a large outdoor mall with many different stores and restaurants. This shopping spot covers 25 acres of land. It has a mix of smaller shops and bigger main stores, called anchor stores. One of the most famous anchor stores here is a huge Bass Pro Shops Outpost.
Glenn Square gets its name from the nearby Glenn Highway. This highway ends close to the shopping center. It's also located across the highway from Northway Mall, another important shopping area in Anchorage.
How Glenn Square Started
Glenn Square was built by a company called P.O’B Montgomery & Company. They bought the land from the city of Anchorage. The city wanted to help improve the Mountain View neighborhood. So, they sold the land to help clean up the area and bring new life to it.
Around the same time, the Mountain View neighborhood was getting a big makeover. Many new homes were built, replacing older ones from the 1940s. A local school, Clark Middle School, was also rebuilt. Even the road system got an upgrade, with a new road crossing built for the Glenn Highway.
Building and Growing
Construction on Glenn Square happened in 2006 and 2007. But at first, it was hard to get stores to rent spaces there. A few miles away, a much bigger shopping center called Tikahtnu Commons started being built in 2007. This new center even got the first Target store in Alaska!
Tikahtnu Commons attracted many businesses that might have gone to Glenn Square instead. For a while, Glenn Square had many empty stores. A big plan for Glenn Square was to have a 12-screen movie theater from Century Theatres. But when a competitor, Regal Cinemas, decided to build an even bigger 16-screen movie theater at Tikahtnu Commons, Century Theatres pulled out of Glenn Square. This was a big setback for the project.
However, things changed for Glenn Square in 2014. That's when the large Bass Pro Shops opened its doors. This new store brought many more visitors to Glenn Square. After that, the shopping center became much more popular, and new businesses started moving in.
In October 2014, a company called JL Properties bought Glenn Square.
