William George Glenvil Hall (born April 4, 1887 – died October 13, 1962) was an important British politician. He was a barrister (a type of lawyer who argues cases in court) and a member of the Labour Party. He worked hard to represent people in the British Parliament for many years.

A Life in Politics

William Glenvil Hall dedicated much of his life to public service. He was known for his work as a politician and his role in the Labour Party.

First Steps in Parliament

He first became a Member of Parliament (MP) in 1929. An MP is someone elected to represent a specific area in the House of Commons, which is a part of the UK Parliament. William Glenvil Hall represented the area of Portsmouth Central.

However, he lost his seat just two years later in the 1931 election. This happened when the Labour Party faced a big disagreement over forming a new government called the National Government.

Back in Parliament

William Glenvil Hall returned to the House of Commons in 1939. He won a special election, called a by-election, in the Colne Valley constituency. He continued to represent this area until he passed away in 1962 at the age of 75. This means he was an MP for over 20 years in his second period in Parliament.

Serving in Government

After World War II, Clement Attlee became Prime Minister and formed a new government. From 1945 to 1950, William Glenvil Hall served as the Financial Secretary to the Treasury. This important job involves helping to manage the country's money and finances.

In 1947, he was made a Privy Councillor. Being a Privy Councillor is an honor given to senior politicians, and it means they can advise the King or Queen.

After Government Role

After leaving his government position in 1950, William Glenvil Hall continued to be an active politician. He became the chairman of the Parliamentary Labour Party (PLP)'s liaison committee. This role is similar to the current Chairman of the PLP, which involves helping to connect and coordinate the Labour MPs in Parliament.
