The Globe Village Fire House is a special old building in Southbridge, Massachusetts. It used to be a fire house, which is where firefighters kept their equipment and lived. This building was the first of two fire stations built in Southbridge during the 1890s. The other one, called the Elm Street Fire House, is still used by firefighters today.

The Globe Village Fire House was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. This means it's an important historical building. When it was listed, it was being used by a group of military veterans.

What Does the Fire House Look Like?

The Globe Village Fire House is in the middle of Southbridge's Globe Village. This area is a busy spot west of downtown Southbridge. You can find the building on the south side of West Street, close to Main Street.

Its Design and Features

It's a brick building with a style called Colonial Revival. It has some features that look like Greek Revival buildings too. The building is two and a half stories tall. On the ground floor, there are three large openings called equipment bays. These bays were where the fire trucks were parked.

To the left of these bays, there is a tall corner tower. The top of the tower has a special roof called a mansard roof. At the bottom of the tower, there's a door for people to walk through. Most of the doors and windows have a rounded top, like an arch. There's also a round window in the middle of the front roof area. The corners of the building have decorative brick columns called pilasters. Under the roof, there's a line of decorative bricks called corbelling.

The History of the Fire House

This fire station was built in 1894. It was the second permanent home for the Globe Village Fire Company. This fire company was started a long time ago, in 1832. Their very first building was built in 1860. That building was located on the north side of Main Street.
