Norway's Longest River
The Glomma is super important to Norway. It's not just the longest river, but it also carries the most water. Imagine all the water from a huge area flowing into one river!
Where Does Glomma Start?
The journey of the Glomma begins in Sør-Trøndelag, a region in Norway. It starts from Aursund lake, which is near the town of Røros. This lake is about 690 meters (2,264 feet) above sea level. That's pretty high up!
Where Does Glomma End?
After its long trip through Norway, the Glomma finally reaches the sea. It flows into the Skagerrak, which is part of the North Sea. The river's mouth is located in the city of Fredrikstad in Østfold county. Here, the river meets the ocean at sea level.
What's in a Name?
The name Glomma comes from an old language called Old Norse. The original word was Glaumr, which means "noise" or "racket." This name probably describes the sound of the river as it flows, especially in its faster parts. Sometimes, people also call it Glåma.
River's Path and Tributaries
The Glomma flows through many different landscapes in Norway. It passes through forests, valleys, and even some cities. Along its way, other smaller rivers join it. These smaller rivers are called tributaries.
Major Tributaries
- The Vorma river is a big tributary that flows into the Glomma. It joins the Glomma just north of a place called Årnes.
- Another important river that feeds into the Glomma is the Rena.
How Big is the Glomma?
The Glomma is not only long but also has a very large watershed. A watershed is the area of land where all the water drains into a specific river. The Glomma's watershed covers about 42,000 square kilometers (16,000 square miles). That's a massive area! The river's average water flow is about 698 cubic meters per second.
