Gloria Suzanne Koenigsberger Horowitz is a scientist from Mexico. She studies space and teaches at a big university called the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). She's an expert in huge stars and how they interact. She also helped bring the Internet to Mexico for the very first time in 1989!

Gloria Koenigsberger's Journey in Science

Gloria Koenigsberger was born in Mexico City. She studied Physics at UNAM and earned her first degree in 1978. Later, she got her doctorate in Astronomy from Pennsylvania State University in 1983.

Leading the Astronomy Institute

From 1990 to 1998, Gloria Koenigsberger was the director of UNAM's Institute of Astronomy. During her time as director, the Institute started working with several observatories in the United States. Their goal was to make the San Pedro Mártir (SPM) National Observatory better. They also wanted to build a new, large telescope there.

As part of these efforts, UNAM became the second international member of a group called the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA). They also worked with the University of Texas to build parts for the Hobby-Eberly Telescope. She also helped the Institute grow by creating new research centers in other cities in Mexico.

Her Work as a Scientist

Today, Gloria Koenigsberger is a professor and research scientist at UNAM's Institute of Physical Sciences. She is a top-level member of the Sistema Nacional de Investigadores (SNI). She is also part of the International Astronomical Union (IAU).

Her main research focuses on understanding huge stars. She studies how these stars are made and how they change over time. She is especially interested in how stars behave when they are part of a binary system, meaning two stars orbiting each other.

Awards and Recognition

Gloria Koenigsberger is a respected member of the Mexican Academy of Sciences.

Selected Publications

Gloria Koenigsberger has written more than 120 research articles. One of her notable works is Los inicios de Internet en México (The Beginnings of Internet in Mexico).
