Glycymeris (shells) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The shells of large saltwater clams called Glycymeris are very important to archaeologists studying the southwestern USA. This is because an ancient group of people called the Hohokam used these shells to make special items for trading. Archaeologists often call them "Glycymeris shells."

What are Glycymeris Shells?

Glycymeris shells come from a type of large clam. These clams are known as Glycymeris gigantea. They can grow to be as big as 10 centimeters (about 4 inches) across! They are quite beautiful shells.

Where Do These Clams Live?

The Glycymeris gigantea clams live in the warm waters off the coast of western Mexico. You can find them along the Pacific coast of Baja California. They also live all through the Gulf of California. Their home stretches as far south as Acapulco.

How the Hohokam Used Glycymeris Shells

The Hohokam people were very skilled at using these large shells. They mainly turned them into beautiful bracelets and rings. When they collected the clams, they often removed the center part of the shell right away. This made the shells lighter and easier to carry. Then, they would transport the shells back to their villages. Many of these villages were located in the Gila Basin.

Glycymeris Shells and Ancient Trade

These shells were not just pretty decorations. They were also very important for trade. The Hohokam traded these shell items with other groups of people. This shows how connected ancient communities were. Archaeologists study these shells to learn about old trade routes and how people lived long ago. Many books and studies about ancient trade in the American Southwest talk about Glycymeris shells.

Other Places Glycymeris Shells Have Been Found

Interestingly, Glycymeris shells have been found in other parts of the world too. For example, some have been discovered in Vinča, a very old archaeological site in Europe. Shells from the Glycymeris clam were even found used as eyes in small statues from the ancient city of Ur. This shows how widely these shells were valued, even in different cultures.
