Pompey (whose full name was Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus) was one of the most important figures in the late Roman Republic. He was born in 106 BC and became famous for his military victories. He earned the nickname "Magnus," meaning "the Great," because of his amazing successes in battle.

Pompey was a very skilled general. He won many wars for Rome, expanding its power and influence. He fought in Spain, against pirates in the Mediterranean Sea, and in the East, where he conquered new lands for the Roman Republic. His victories brought him immense wealth and popularity.

The First Triumvirate

Pompey formed a powerful alliance with two other important Romans: Julius Caesar and Marcus Licinius Crassus. This alliance was known as the First Triumvirate. Together, these three men held a lot of power in Rome, working to achieve their political goals. However, their alliance eventually fell apart.

Conflict with Caesar

After Crassus died, the friendship between Pompey and Caesar turned into a rivalry. Both men were incredibly ambitious and wanted to be the most powerful person in Rome. This led to a civil war, a war fought between groups within the same country. Pompey led the Roman Senate's army against Caesar's forces.

The civil war was a long and difficult struggle. Pompey was eventually defeated by Caesar at the Battle of Pharsalus in 48 BC. After his defeat, Pompey fled to Egypt, hoping to find safety. Sadly, he was assassinated there shortly after arriving.
