William Hare "Gobo" Ashley (born on April 7, 1878, died on July 14, 1930) was a South African cricketer. He played in only one special international cricket match, called a Test match, in 1889. This was only the second Test match ever played by South Africa.

About Gobo Ashley

Gobo Ashley was a talented cricket player from South Africa. He was known for his bowling style, which was called "left-arm medium-paced." This means he bowled with his left arm at a medium speed.

His Special Test Match

In 1889, Gobo Ashley played his only Test match for South Africa. This was a very important game against England. Even though it was his only Test, he made a big impact.

During the match, he bowled incredibly well. He managed to take 7 wickets while giving away 95 runs. This is known as taking a "five-wicket haul" in cricket. It means a bowler gets five or more wickets in one innings. Gobo Ashley was only the second South African player to achieve this amazing feat in a Test match.

Playing for Western Province

After his Test match, Gobo Ashley continued to play cricket. He played in three "first-class" matches. These are high-level games, but not international Test matches.

He played for a team called Cape Town Clubs and later for the Western Province cricket team. This was part of the local cricket league in South Africa. He played these matches in 1890 and 1891.

In these games, he took 13 wickets, showing his skill as a bowler. He was also part of the Western Province team that won a big competition. This was the 1890–91 Champion Bat Tournament. In that tournament, he was one of the main bowlers for his team.
