God's Love We Deliver (GLWD) is a special charity in New York City. It was started in 1985. This organization prepares and delivers healthy meals to people who are very sick. Even though its name sounds religious, it helps everyone, no matter their beliefs.

GLWD volunteers prepare and deliver meals to people in New York City who are ill. The organization helps over 14,700 clients each year. By 2024, GLWD had delivered more than 35 million meals in New York City. This amazing work has happened over 39 years! The organization gets money for its work in many ways, including special events with famous people.

History of God's Love We Deliver

The idea for God's Love We Deliver started in 1985. A hospice worker named Ganga Stone (1941–2021) visited a very sick person. She saw how hard it was for sick people to get and make their own food. This made her decide to start GLWD with her roommate, Jane Best.

In the beginning, Best and Stone delivered just a few meals a day. They even used bicycles! By 1993, GLWD was serving two meals a day to 550 people.

New Home for God's Love

In December 1995, the organization moved into its own building. This happened on World AIDS Day. Their new home was at 166 Amsterdam Avenue in Manhattan. Before this, they rented kitchen space in a hostel. The building was greatly updated in 2015. This was because the organization had grown so much.

Expanding Who They Help

In 2001, God's Love We Deliver started helping more people. They expanded their mission to serve clients with many different illnesses, not just one type.

In 2021, God's Love We Deliver planned to give out 2.5 million meals. These meals went to 10,000 New Yorkers who were too sick to leave their homes.

GLWD Today: Meals and Volunteers

As of March 2024, the organization delivers more than 15,200 meals every weekday. These meals go to clients, their caregivers, and family members. They expect to deliver over 4.2 million meals in 2024.

Nutritionists at GLWD work with each person to create a special meal plan. This plan fits their health needs. Their clients have over 200 different health conditions. Most clients live with more than one illness.

Their building at 166 Avenue of the Americas has a huge kitchen and bakery. It's almost 10,000 square feet! They also handle their own deliveries. They often work with local businesses and school groups. In 2023, they hosted over 670 volunteer groups.
