Western Australia cadastral divisions
This map shows the 26 counties of Western Australia.

Goderich County was one of 26 special areas in Western Australia. These areas were set up in 1829 to help manage land. Think of them like old-fashioned land divisions or zones.

What Was Goderich County?

Goderich County was one of the original 26 "counties" created in Western Australia back in 1829. These counties were not like the counties we have today with local governments. Instead, they were used for keeping track of land ownership and boundaries. They helped people know exactly where their land was located.

Why Was It Called Goderich?

The county was named after a very important person: F. J. Robinson, 1st Viscount Goderich. He was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom for a short time, from August 1827 to January 1828. A Prime Minister is the main leader of a country's government. Naming places after important figures was a common practice back then.

Where Was Goderich County Located?

Goderich County covered parts of what are now known as the Hay Land District and the Kojonup Land District. These "Land Districts" are still used today to help describe and manage land ownership. So, even though Goderich County isn't used anymore, its old location is still important for understanding land records in that area.
