Life and Role of Lord Macdonald
Lord Macdonald has an important role as both a landowner and a leader of his historic clan. His life has been dedicated to his family, his land, and his community in Scotland.
Early Life and Education
Godfrey Macdonald was born as the oldest son of Alexander Macdonald, 7th Baron Macdonald, and his wife, Anne Whitaker. Because his father was a baron, Godfrey was set to inherit the title.
For his education, he attended Eton College, a very well-known and historic school in England.
Becoming a Baron and Clan Chief
In 1970, when his father passed away, Godfrey inherited the title and became the 8th Baron Macdonald. At the same time, he also became the High Chief of Clan Donald. A clan chief is the leader of a large group of families who share a common ancestor and history.
Lord Macdonald was also involved in local government. He served on the Inverness-shire County Council from 1970 to 1975 and the Skye and Lochalsh District Council from 1975 to 1983, helping to make decisions for his local area.
Family Life
In 1969, Lord Macdonald married Claire Catlow. She is now known as Lady Macdonald and is a famous chef and author of cookbooks.
Together, they have four children:
- The Honourable Alexandra Louise Macdonald (born 1973)
- The Honourable Isabella Claire Macdonald (born 1975)
- The Honourable Meriel Iona Macdonald (born 1978)
- The Honourable Godfrey Evan Hugo Thomas Macdonald (born 1982)
The title "Honourable" is used by the children of a baron.
