Godfrey Quigley (born May 4, 1923 – died September 7, 1994) was a talented actor from Ireland. He was known for his work in movies, on TV, and on stage. You might recognize him from two famous films by director Stanley Kubrick: A Clockwork Orange and Barry Lyndon.

Early Life and Acting Beginnings

Godfrey Quigley was born in Jerusalem. At that time, his father was working there as an officer in the British Army. In the 1930s, his family moved back to Ireland.

After serving in the military during the Second World War, Godfrey decided to become an actor. He trained at the Abbey School of Acting, which is a well-known acting school in Ireland.

Famous Roles and Theatre Work

Godfrey Quigley started his acting career in films in 1949. His first movie was called Saints and Sinners. He later appeared in two big movies directed by Stanley Kubrick. He played the prison chaplain in A Clockwork Orange (1971). Then, he was Captain Grogan in Barry Lyndon (1975).

On British television, he played a former gangster in a show called Big Breadwinner Hog (1969). He also had many important roles in plays. One of his most famous stage roles was in The Gigli Concert by Tom Murphy. For this role, he won the Harvey's Best Actor Award in 1984.

In the 1950s, Godfrey Quigley helped start a theatre group called the Globe Theatre Company. His wife, Genevieve Lyons, was also a member of this group. The company stopped performing in 1960. Around the same time, he also produced a radio show called The Kennedys of Castleross.

In 1983, he appeared in the popular movie Educating Rita.

Later Career and Legacy

Godfrey Quigley continued acting for many years. His last film role was in 1989. He passed away in Dublin, Ireland, at the age of 71. He had been living with Alzheimer's disease.
