Gohar Ali Khan (Urdu: گوہر علی خان, Pashto: ګوهر علي خان; born 15 April 1971) is a Pakistani lawyer and politician. He has been the leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) political party since December 2, 2023. He is also a member of the National Assembly of Pakistan, which is like their parliament. He started this role on February 29, 2024.
Before becoming the PTI chairman, he was the head of elections for the party from July 15, 2023, to November 30, 2023. As a lawyer, Gohar Ali Khan has helped former Prime Minister Imran Khan with his legal matters. Imran Khan was the previous leader of the PTI. Before joining PTI in 2022, Gohar Ali Khan was part of the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) for five years. He also took part in the Lawyers' Movement in 2007. This was a big protest against the unfair removal of Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry.

Early Life and Education
Gohar Ali Khan was born on October 10, 1971, in Buner, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. His family belongs to the Pashtun group, specifically the Yusufzai tribe. His father, Abdur Rauf Khan, was a member of the local assembly twice. He was the first person from Buner to be elected to the Parliament. Gohar Ali Khan has two older brothers and one younger brother.
He went to the United Kingdom to study law. In 1997, he started his law degree (LLB) at the University of Wolverhampton. He then became a barrister in England and Wales in 2001. Later, in 2004, he earned a Master of Laws (LLM) degree from the University of Washington School of Law in the United States.
Legal Career
Gohar Ali Khan began his legal career in Pakistan. He worked with a famous lawyer named Aitzaz Ahsan. A big moment in his career was when he joined the Lawyers' Movement in 2007. He also helped with the case to bring back Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry.
After joining the PTI party, he worked on many important legal cases for them. This included cases related to party funding and other legal challenges. He also represented PTI in a case about special seats in the parliament.
Gohar Ali Khan has experience with different types of court cases. He has appeared in various high-level courts in Pakistan.
Political Journey
Joining the Pakistan People's Party (2004–2009)
Gohar Ali Khan first ran for a seat in the National Assembly of Pakistan in 2008. He was a candidate for the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) in his home area, NA-28 Buner. However, he did not win this election. He received 27,532 votes but was defeated by another candidate.
Leading the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (2022–Present)
On July 15, 2023, Gohar Ali Khan was chosen as the Chief Election Commissioner for the PTI party. He held this role until November 30, 2023. He stepped down because he was nominated to become the party's chairman.
On December 2, 2023, he was elected as the new chairman of the PTI. The previous chairman, Imran Khan, decided not to run again due to some legal challenges.
Later, on December 22, 2023, Gohar Ali Khan was removed from his position. This happened because the party's internal elections were declared invalid by the Election Commission of Pakistan. However, a court later suspended this decision on December 26, 2023, allowing him to continue as chairman.
On February 22, 2024, Gohar Ali Khan announced that new elections for the chairman position would be held. He was nominated by Imran Khan to run again. Other candidates also filed to run, but eventually, Gohar Ali Khan was declared elected without opposition. The official announcement was made on March 3, 2024.
As Chairman of PTI
As the chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Gohar Ali Khan handles the party's legal matters and internal issues. He also helps plan the party's political actions. He often holds press conferences and releases statements based on directions from PTI's founder, Imran Khan. Gohar Khan has overseen important legal cases for the party. He has stated that the outcomes of these cases were big wins for PTI and Pakistan.
A main goal for Gohar Ali Khan is to call for the release of Imran Khan. He believes Imran Khan is unfairly held. He has also spoken out against the government for allowing phone tapping, which he says is against the country's rules. He has also called for changes in how the country's top judges are appointed.
In June 2024, there were reports that some PTI-backed members of the National Assembly might resign. This was due to disagreements within the party. Gohar Ali Khan denied these rumors and worked to keep the party united.
In September 2024, Gohar Ali Khan led major protests in Islamabad. He was arrested and then released on the same day. He also criticized the government's plans for new changes to the country's laws. He said these changes would harm the independence of the courts. To oppose these changes, he held meetings with other political leaders.
