Golconda Skate Park, also called Fat Kid, is a fun public skate park in Brooklyn, New York City. It's located in the Downtown Brooklyn and Fort Greene areas. This park started as a "DIY" (Do-It-Yourself) skate spot. It was built under the Brooklyn Queens Expressway. The park is 18,000 square feet and was finished in 2016. You can find it inside Golconda Playground.

History of Golconda Skate Park

Golconda Skate Park is located under the Brooklyn Queens Expressway. It began as a "DIY" (Do-It-Yourself) skate spot. People knew it as Fat Kid or the Fat Kid spot.

In 2013, work began to make Golconda Playground better. This project cost $3.7 million. The plan included redesigning the old DIY skate park. The goal was to make it a public skate park that fit well with the rest of the playground.

In 2016, the New York City Parks Department opened the new Golconda Playground. The redesigned skate park was a big part of it. Steve Rodriguez, a skateboarder, helped with the design. He worked with the Parks Department and the skating community. This made sure the park was great for skaters.

Since early 2019, the NYC Skateboard Coalition helps keep the park clean. They work with the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation. They host monthly clean-ups at Golconda. This helps remove trash and dirt that builds up. In November 2019, the Brooklyn Skate Garden joined them. They co-hosted a clean-up and a skate session. Also in November 2019, the NYC Skateboard Coalition added a special lock box. It holds brooms and other tools. This means local skaters can easily clean the park themselves.

Why it was called Fat Kid Spot

The original DIY skate spot was called Fat Kid Spot. This name came from its low-impact obstacles. These obstacles were close to the ground. This made them easier for everyone to use, even beginners.

What does Golconda mean?

The name "Golconda" is a portmanteau. This means it's a word made by blending other words. "Golconda" comes from "GOLd," "CONcord," and "anaconDA." The park is shaped a bit like a snake. It is also located near Gold Street and Concord Street.
