Gold Harbour (also known as Puerto de Oro in Spanish) is a beautiful bay on the east side of South Georgia Island. It's a small area, about 5 miles (8 kilometers) southwest of Cape Charlotte. At the very back of the bay, you can see the impressive Bertrab Glacier.
This special place got its name because of the way the sun shines on the cliffs. In the mornings and evenings, the sunlight makes the cliffs look bright yellow, like gold! Early sealers and whalers often used this name, and it stuck.

Gold Harbour: A Golden Place
Gold Harbour is located on the southeast coast of South Georgia Island. This island is in the southern Atlantic Ocean, far to the east of the southern tip of South America.
In the early 1900s, this bay had a few different names, like "Anna's Bay" or "Sandwich Bay." But the name "Gold Harbour" became the most popular. It was commonly used by people who hunted seals and whales in the area.
Why is it called Gold Harbour?
The name "Gold Harbour" comes from the way the sun lights up the cliffs. When the sun rises or sets, its rays hit the cliffs and make them glow with a golden-yellow color. It's a truly beautiful sight!
There isn't a hidden treasure or special gold rocks here. The name simply describes the stunning natural light show you can see at certain times of the day.
Amazing Animals at Gold Harbour
Gold Harbour is a very important home for many amazing animals. It's a busy breeding ground where different species come to have their babies.
You can find many types of penguins here, including the large King penguins and the smaller Gentoo penguins. These birds gather in large groups, making the beach a lively place.
Giant Southern elephant seals also come to Gold Harbour to breed. They especially like the western part of the beach, where a stream flows from the glacier. You might see huge male seals, called bulls, resting or even playfully fighting.
Another special bird that breeds here is the Light-mantled albatross. These large seabirds are known for their graceful flight over the ocean.
