The Big Golden Guitar is a giant monument found in Tamworth, New South Wales, Australia. It's one of Australia's famous "big things" that you can see across the country. This huge guitar is a well-known landmark in the New England area of New South Wales.
It's also a very popular spot during the exciting Tamworth Country Music Festival.
History of the Big Golden Guitar
The Big Golden Guitar was built in 1988. It stands proudly in front of the Longyard Hotel on Sydney Road. A famous Australian country music singer named Slim Dusty officially showed it to the public for the first time.
The guitar's location in Tamworth is special. It shows how much the city loves and celebrates Australian country music and its talented artists.
Awards and Visitors
Every year, a special award ceremony takes place. At this event, smaller versions of the Golden Guitar are given to artists and musicians. These awards celebrate their amazing work and contributions to country music.
Since it was built, millions of photos have been taken with the Big Golden Guitar. It's a truly popular photo spot! In 2018, over 117,000 people visited the tourist center located at the Big Golden Guitar.
There are exciting plans for the future of this landmark. The local council wants to make the visitor center even better. They hope to build a National Guitar Museum and a cafe right there for tourists to enjoy.
Design of the Golden Guitar
The Big Golden Guitar is about 12 metres (nearly 40 feet) tall. That's as tall as a four-story building! It weighs more than 500 kilograms (over 1,100 pounds).
The giant guitar is made from strong materials like fibreglass and wood. It also has steel inside to make it extra sturdy.
You might notice that the Big Golden Guitar doesn't have any strings. This is because it looks exactly like the smaller Golden Guitar trophies. These trophies are given to the winners at the Country Music Awards of Australia ceremony during the Tamworth Country Music Festival.
