How Goldkenn Started
Goldkenn was created in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1980. Two people, Steven Goldstein and Christian Belce-Kennedy, started the company. They combined parts of their last names to make "Goldkenn."
When they first began, Goldkenn sold chocolates in old-fashioned wooden boxes. They sold these special boxes in duty-free stores, which are shops often found at airports where you don't pay certain taxes. They worked with another chocolate company called Favarger back then.
What Kind of Chocolates Does Goldkenn Make?
Goldkenn is famous for its special chocolate bars and pralines. Pralines are small, bite-sized chocolates with soft fillings.
Gold Bar Chocolates
One of the most exciting things about Goldkenn chocolates is their packaging! Many of their pralines come in boxes that look exactly like small gold bars. They also make milk chocolate coins that look like gold.
Chocolates on Airplanes
In the 1990s, small chocolate bars shaped like gold ingots (another word for a gold bar) were even served on Swissair flights. Imagine getting a little gold bar chocolate when you were flying!
Goldkenn Today
Since 2010, Goldkenn has been part of a larger group of companies called Choco-Diffusion. The company also moved its main office from Geneva to Le Locle in 2011.
Goldkenn and Swiss Gold
In 2014, there was a special campaign in Switzerland called the "Save our Swiss Gold" initiative. This campaign wanted the Swiss National Bank to keep a certain amount of gold in its reserves. Supporters of this idea showed a big pile of Goldkenn gold bar replicas at a press conference. It was a clever way to show what they were talking about!
The Matterhorn Logo
The Goldkenn logo features the Matterhorn. This is one of the most famous mountains in the Alps, known for its pyramid shape. It's a symbol of Switzerland!
