Golf was once a small, quiet place in Marin County, California. It wasn't a big city, but more like a tiny community or a stop along a railroad line. Today, you won't find Golf on a map as a populated place because it's what we call a "former settlement." This means it used to exist as a named location where people lived or worked, but it no longer does.
What Was the Settlement of Golf?
Golf was a very small community located in Marin County, which is in the state of California. It was situated about 7.25 miles (11.67 kilometers) south-southeast of the center of Novato. The area where Golf was located is quite low, only about 23 feet (7 meters) above sea level.
Where Was Golf Located?
The settlement of Golf was found right along the Northwestern Pacific Railroad line. Railroads were very important in the past for travel and moving goods. Being next to a railroad meant that Golf might have been a stop for trains or a place where railroad workers lived. Its exact location was recorded using special coordinates: 38 degrees, 0 minutes, 22 seconds North latitude and 122 degrees, 31 minutes, 57 seconds West longitude.
Why Did Golf Disappear?
Many small settlements like Golf existed for a time and then faded away. Golf appeared on maps until at least 1914. There are many reasons why a place might become a "former settlement." Sometimes, the main reason for its existence, like a specific industry or a railroad stop, might disappear. People might move away to bigger towns for more opportunities. Over time, buildings might be removed, and the land might be used for other purposes, or it might simply return to nature.
