Gomer is a small, unincorporated community located in Allen County, Ohio, United States. You can find it in northern Sugar Creek Township. This community was started in 1833 by three Welshmen. For many years, Gomer was a really important center for the Welsh community in America.

Gomer has its own post office with the ZIP code 45809. It sits right where Gomer Road meets the Old Lincoln Highway. This spot is less than one mile north of U.S. Route 30. Gomer is also part of the larger Lima Metropolitan Statistical Area. Students in Gomer attend schools within the Elida Local School District.

Gomer's Story: A Look Back

The community of Gomer was officially planned out, or "laid out," in 1850. A post office opened in Gomer in 1854. It served the community for many years before closing its doors in 1961.

The Snow Cruiser Incident

On October 28, 1939, something exciting happened in Gomer. Admiral Richard E. Byrd's huge Antarctic Snow Cruiser was driving along the Lincoln Highway. This giant vehicle was designed for exploring Antarctica. However, it drove off a small bridge and landed in a stream! The accident happened because the steering system was damaged.

Over the next three days, about 125,000 people came to Gomer. They wanted to see the amazing Snow Cruiser stuck in the stream. It was quite a sight for the small community!
